Jay Z recently spoke to Vanity Fair about a few things that will come in handy as a sports agent.

Last month Jay Z sold his small interest in the NBA’s Brooklyn Nets. The National Basketball Players Association (NBPA) granted Jay Z certification to represent basketball players in contractual negotiations with NBA teams upon receiving confirmation of the sale. Jay Z has already been certified as a Player Agent by the Major League Baseball Players Association in addition to becoming a registered agent with the NBPA. With great power typically comes great responsibility.

Jay Z chatted with Vanity Fair contributing editor Lisa Robinson soon after earning the right to represent basketball players. In that interview, to be published as the cover story for the magazine’s November issue, Jay Z discussed a few things that he believes will come in handy as a sports agent. Specifically, Jay Z stated, ”I know about budgets. I was a drug dealer.” He continued, “To be in a drug deal, you need to know what you can spend, what you need to re-up. Or if you want to start some sort of barbershop or car wash—those were the businesses back then. Things you can get in easily to get out of [that] life. At some point, you have to have an exit strategy, because your window is very small; you’re going to get locked up or you’re going to die.”
